Epidemiological Study on Toxoplasmosis in Korea

Abstract
Toxoplasmosis, the disease caused by Toxoplasma gondii, is observed in only a sraall portion of those infected. Distinction between Toxoplasma infection and the disease toxoplasmosis has important implications for both diagnosis and, therapy.
The study was carried out. for the purpose of comparision about the positive rate of Toxoplasma antibody of healthy adults and pig breeders during a period of 3 months from April to June, 1985. The one hundred and ten healthy adults living in Gwang-ju City and .81 pig breeders working in pig breeding in Hwasun Gun, Raju Gun and Damjang Gun in -Chollanam Do were examined by indirect latex agglutination test.
The results are summarized as follows
1. Among the 110 samples of test sera of healthy adults, 8 cases showed positive; 1 : 16 in 3, 1 :32 in 3, 1 :64 in 1, and 1 :256 in 1 case. Among the 81 samples of test sera of ,pig breeders, 19 cases showed positive; 1 : 16 in 8, 1 :32 in 4, 1 :64 in 4, 1 : 128 in 1 and 1 : 256 in 2 cases.
2. The positive rate of Toxoplasma antibody of healthy adults was 7.3%(male: 8.8%, female: 4.4%) in these samples with latex antibodies of 1 : 16 or higher being regarded as positive. The relation between the positive rates of male and female was not significanay ,different (p> 0. 05).
3. The positive rate of Toxoplasma antibody of pig breeder was 23.5% (male: 25.5%5, female: 20.6%). The relation between the positive rates of male and female was not sign:ificantly different (p>0.05).
4. The relation between the positive rates of Toxoplasma antibody of healthy adults and ¢¥pig breeders was significantly different (p<0.005).
5. It was found that the positive rates of Toxoplasma antibody of healthy adults and pig breeders were not significantly different with age group(healthy adults: male; p>0.3, -female; p>0.8, pig breeders: male; p>0.5, female; p>0.8).
6. Among the positive cases of healthy adults, the Ig-G value was higher than normal in 37.5%, and that of pig breeders was in 42.2%. Among the positive cases of healthy .-adults, the Ig-M value was higher than normal in 12.5%, and that of pig breeders was in
